![]() ![]() And even within the Marco Polo chat I’d set up for Buddy Readers, people were talking about the different ways they were starting to tackle it. I’m hearing Maria’s voice in The Sound of Music sing: “Start at the very beginning, a very good place to start.” However, as I started researching, I realized there were a number of ways to approach reading it. Now, this may seem obvious for book readers. And the first question everyone seemed to have? “So…how do we read it?” ![]() “S” is a complex book, so it can come across as an intimidating read. And it turns out, there were a lot of people interested in reading it together! My first hosted casual buddy read had inadvertently started. When my TikTok post got a bunch of comments from others who also wanted to read it, I decided to see if people were up for a Buddy Read. Maybe the time had come to take it off the shelf… I knew it would be right up my alley with its annotations and inserts, but I’d just never gotten around to reading it. “S”, also known as “Ship of Theseus” by JJ Abrams and Doug Dorst, had been sitting on my shelf for probably six or seven years-a Christmas gift from a colleague. Last summer, the “book within a book, within a book” went viral on Booktok. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Slightly less faithful in this second delivery, Hen gives the kiss to Frog, who in turn gives it to Cat, setting off a chain that eventually leads back to: Little Bear! ![]() Giving the painting into the keeping of his friend Hen, Little Bear asks her to take it to Grandmother Bear, which she faithfully does, receiving a kiss for Little Bear in return. First published in 1968, this fifth and final early reader devoted to the childhood adventures of Little Bear opens as its eponymous ursine hero is painting a picture - one depicting a monster who looks quite a bit like one of the Wild Things from illustrator Maurice Sendak's own classic picture-book, Where the Wild Things Are - for his grandmother. ![]() ![]() Geach argues that Aquinas's view of abstraction in his mature thought is not like that, but more akin to a light that creates the concepts. Abstraction of the essential pressupposes that the intellect already knows what is going to be essential (to be picked out) and what is going to be accidental. It cannot be that the intellect somehow "extracts" the universal from particular beings by attending to what is common and essential to all of them, because, as Peter Geach argues, in order for our intellect to selectively extract what is the essential F in a being, leaving aside its accidents X, it must *already* be able to identify F in opposition to X. But how do we come to know universals? I find the theory of abstraction to be very problematic when it comes to explaining our knowledge. We use them in thought and they are necessary for valid reasoning, even. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Universals exist and we think of universal concepts. Also, I think I realized that there might be a further problem with the idea of neutral "common natures" that are held by both Aquinas and Scotus. I will shamelessly repost my previous comment on to this thread, in hopes that more people can eventually answer me - maybe even Feser. ![]() ![]() ![]() That a part of us will live forever and ever, and that in making us, the Universe was celebrating itself, we are its living, breathing joy.” “Someone I loved once told me that there are fragments within us that are the same age as the Universe, and because we are matter, we can never be destroyed. Their most difficult challenge as a “family” didn’t come from illness or death, however. Yet amazingly, each was able to find acceptance in the loud, hairy pack they formed. Each of the 25 they took in had a unique personality. But Rosenfelt focuses primarily on the dogs he and Myers adopted. Over the years, they would rescue thousands of animals that otherwise would have been euthanized. As the pair entered into full-blown “dog lunacy,” the number of dogs they rescued reached, at its height, 42. After Tara died, the two decided to honor her memory by working as dog-shelter volunteers and then by starting their own rescue group. As Rosenfelt’s relationship with Myers developed, so did his interest in dogs. Myers was already an avid dog lover who lived with a golden retriever named Tara. When Rosenfelt ( Leader of the Pack, 2012, etc.) met Debbie Myers, the woman who became his second wife, he never imagined that they would go on to become partners in both life and dog rescuing.
